MED has mobilized 3 Lineshaft units to reduce the high level of water at Faraskour drainage station and Attawi drainage Station in Damietta governorate to protect surrounding agricultural land from drowning.
Eng. Mohamed Mohamed Abdel Atty, head of the Mechanical and Electrical Department-MED, confirmed the increase of the drainage water level in Faraskour drainage station and Attwi station, serving 32 Thousand Feddans in Damietta Governorate. Most of this drainage water comes from violated fish farms which depletes the water from Salam Canal, which resulted in the receipt of large amount of water to the two stations in a short period of time in addition to large amounts of weeds and debris in the Suction channel of the two stations. He said that quick action was taken to resolve the crisis, which is a result of the maximum preparations for the high demands season and the continuous coordination between the ministry’s departments to remove any obstacles and to face any emergencies and critical situations.He confirmed that the two stations are working at full capacity to absorb the drain water amounts received, which exceeds the total discharge capacity of the two stations, causing the high suction water levels at the two stations, causing drowning of agricultural land and farmers complaining. MED has mobilized (3) line shaft emergency units of discharge 2m3/s each to reduce the suction water levels and to be further used in emergency cases, protecting the surrounding agricultural land from drowning.

MED used Mobile diesel hydraflo unit with discharge ½ m3/s at Head 6 meters on the Om Al-lahm canal from Al-Qanan drain in West Sharqia to raise the water level in the canal to meet farmers’ irrigation needs.
Within the framework of cooperation between the Ministry of Water Resources and irrigation-MWRI’s departments, the Mechanical and Electrical Department-MED, represented by Zagazig Emergency Center, installed one emergency mobile diesel unit with discharge ½ m3/s at Head 6m (quick rescue) on the Om Al-lahm canal from Al-Qanan drain affiliated to West Sharqia irrigation department to solve farmers’ complaints. The unit was installed and operated at full load efficiently despite difficult site conditions.

Mobile Hydraflo Units has been recognized for their contribution for 22 years in the face of emergencies and crises.
Dr. Yousuf Waly, former Minister of Agriculture, accompanied by Dr. Hussein Ramzi Kazem, former Governor of Sharqia and Eng. Abdul Latif Askar, former Head of the MED, opened the Zagazig Emergency Center on 5/4/1997. The Zagazig Emergency Center is one of the largest emergency centers in the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation. It was be noted that the first task assigned to the Zagazig emergency center in cooperation with the Mariout emergency center, is the installation of 3 emergency diesel mobile units with 0.5 m3/s. Mobile hydraflo units were a quick relief during the floods that swept the city of Hurghada (Red Sea Governorate) in November and December 1996.

The minister of water resources and irrigation has instructed Zagazig Emergency Center to use a mobile hydraflo unit (1 m3/s discharge) to reduce water levels due to blockage in the side siphon of the Alqasbi drain to save crops in the area.
In accordance with the instructions of The Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation to take immediate action to save the crops in Manshiya Al-Jadida area in Al-Kassabi and under the guidance of the Head of MED, the Deputy and the Head of Stations Sector, the Zagazig Emergency Center (in cooperation with the Abu-Sikeen emergency center in Kafr El-Sheikh), will operate one emergency mobile unit with a discharge of 1 m3/s in Zagazig emergency center to reduce water levels due to blockage in the side siphon of the Alqasbi drain to save crops in the area. The cleaning of the siphon is being carried out by the Drainage Authority.

Dr. Mohamed Abdel-Aty, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, declared in a press release in ELyoum 7 that the “Bilbes Drain” has been clogged (k 60,00) inside the village Kulj; and a Hydraflo Unit of capacity of 0.5 m3/s was used to resolve the problem.
The problem was a result of a slurry of the expulsion of the drinking water plant east of Cairo, pointing to the improper behaviors of some inhabitants; throwing their garbage and debris in the Drain which led to blocking it and rising water level. To resolve the problem, a Hydraflo Unit of capacity of 0.5 m3/s was used to reduce the water level in the drain and reaching to the pipes, and in addition to another submersible pump in second room for water suction. They were able then to clear all water and reach to the pipes, removing all the waste that caused the blockage.

Apco Project design for Fish farm pumping stations (Ghalion) has tremendously reduced the project initial budgets and implementation time.
In 2015, an inquiry was sent to APCO to submit its offer for a turnkey project of three pumping stations for fish farm project in north middle delta (Ghalion). The preliminary project design was made by their project consultant, with a cooperation of a pump manufacturer. APCO had offered a more practical solution, submitting a new design of the pump station with more suitable dimensions, more efficient land use plan, while maintaining the projects requirements. (discharge and total head) of the original design. This result in saving of millions of Egyptian pounds of construction works and considerably less implementation time.

APCO offered its solutions to GIZ for a project to raise the water level at the ends of canals to meet the needs of irrigation in El-Behira Governorate with almost quarter the budget of the original planned pump station cost with a shorter implementation time requiring much less Human resources; saving a lot of money, time and effort.
GIZ and the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation agreed to build a pumping station to increase the water supply during the high demand season (May to September) with a total budget of 5 Million Egyptian Pounds; with a 12 months implementation period to improve agriculture productivity during this high-demand season.
APCO have studied the needs for the project’s irrigation water, and offered an alternative solution for a mobile pump station with the same capacity and almost quarter the budget of the original planned pump station cost with a shorter implementation time requiring much less Human resources; saving a lot of money, time and effort.
Afterwards, this mobile pumping unit had been used many times during the winter season to rescue the flooded land due to heavy rain in nearby areas as happened in Dec. 2015 in Kom El-Kanater, El-Kanawia Canal; and later in in June 2016 for Keel Abo Homos station to overcome a sudden breakdown of stationary pump station.

The African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW) in conjunction with the African Union Commission (AUC) holds the 4th Africa Water Week from May 14th – 18th, 2012 at the InterContinental Cairo City Stars, hosted by the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, Egypt (MWRI).
The Africa Water Week (aww) represents a political commitment at the highest level with over 1000 participants from governments, regional institutions, international partners, the private sector, the scientific community, civil society, and the media from all over the world, and in particular Africa, meeting to discuss and collectively seek solutions to Africa’s water and sanitation challenges. It is held annually in keeping with the decision of the AMCOW to institutionalize AWW in order to build momentum on achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) water and sanitation targets by 2015, and the 2025 Africa Water Vision. This is in line with AMCOW’s belief that adequate and equitable access to water and sanitation makes a critical contribution to Africa’s progress towards sustainable growth and development.
May 2012 marks the 10th anniversary of the formation of AMCOW. The 4th Africa Water Week will therefore celebrate AMCOW’s achievements as we reflect on opportunities for achieving water security and adequate sanitation in Africa. the theme of aww-4 “Water for Growth in Africa, AMCOW’s Journey at 10” becomes a time for stock taking for the continental organisation with the AU mandate to provide political leadership, policy direction and advocacy in the provision, use and management of water resources.
